Back2Basickz - September Newsletter 2025

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

Amanda Coombs, Executive Director, Back2Basickz Youth Support Services

Dear Back 2 Basickz Family,

As we welcome September, our youth are preparing for another school year filled with new opportunities, challenges, and growth. At Back 2 Basickz, we know this transition can bring excitement but also stress, which is why our focus this month is on safety and mental well-being.

School is not just about academics; it’s also about feeling supported, safe, and confident in navigating daily life. We want our young people to know that it’s okay to ask for help, to take breaks when needed, and to prioritize their mental health just as much as their grades.

Our programs will continue to provide a safe space for youth to express themselves, build skills, and access the guidance they need as they head back into classrooms and routines. Together, with our community and families, we are committed to ensuring our youth feel cared for, heard, and empowered to thrive this school year.

Let’s make this September not only about returning to school but also about returning to balance, resilience, and wellness.

With gratitude,

Amanda Coombs

Executive Director

Back 2 Basickz

Our Monthly Calendar

September

Scarborough Calendar

Jane & Finch Calendar

This month’s newsletter is dedicated to the memory of Jahvai Roy, a young life tragically taken by gun violence this past August. Jahvai’s passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the urgency to continue supporting our youth, creating safe spaces, and working together as a community to end senseless violence.

At Back 2 Basickz, we carry his memory with us as we recommit to our mission of uplifting and protecting the next generation. This September issue is shared in his honour.

Monthly highlights

Mooreland Camp Recap & Highlights

Our 3 hour drive out of the city brought us to Moorland Camp, a little island on the lake where 42 of us spent four unforgettable days. Life at camp was a big change, no phones, just nature, activities, and community. Singing quickly became part of our daily rhythm: before meals, during activities, and throughout the day. We also enjoyed canoeing, archery, wall climbing, ziplining, swimming, field games, and even origami. It was a week filled with energy, laughter, and memories we’ll carry with us.

Acknowledgments

to the Kevin Burke Family Foundation and the O’Neil Leger Family Foundation

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Kevin Burke Family Foundation and the O’Neill Ledger Family Foundation for their generous contributions. Their combined donation of $3,800 made our trip to Moorland Camp possible, giving all of our youth the opportunity to enjoy four incredible days filled with activities, community, and unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

Shout Out to Turning Pages!

We want to thank Turning Pages for generously donating 10 books to our growing library. Your support means a lot to us, and we truly value the work you do to inspire and empower young readers. Keep up the great work helping build a love for reading in the community!

Shout out to Divine! (B2B Scarborough Program)

Divine has been absolutely phenomenal! Whether it’s participating in workshops, supporting outreach efforts, taking initiative in the Intergenerational Seniors Program, or volunteering at Back 2 Basickz, Divine always shows up with positive energy and a readiness to get involved.

She has also introduced many newcomers and participants to our centre, helping our community grow and thrive.

Thank you, Divine, for all that you do!

Shout out to Anthony! (B2B Finch Program)

Anthony has always taken on a leadership role, earning the nickname “Older Brother” among the youth. Whether he’s joking around, offering encouragement, or lending a helping hand, Anthony is someone the younger youth can always count on for support.

We’ve also had the privilege of learning a lot from Anthony’s passion for construction. As a graduate of Steps to Construction; a high school program that prepares students for careers in the trade, he’s always eager to share his knowledge. From explaining how equipment works to breaking down what’s happening on a job site, Anthony turns every moment into a teaching opportunity.

We’re excited to cheer him on as he continues to grow in his construction career and wish him the very best in all his future endeavours!

Donors shout out!
