Back2Basickz - April Newsletter 2026

APRIL NEWSLETTER

Amanda Coombs, Executive Director, Back2Basickz Youth Support Services

Dear Back 2 Basickz Family,

As we step into April, we welcome a season of growth, renewal, and new possibilities. With longer days and warmer weather ahead, it’s a powerful reminder that change, just like the seasons is both natural and necessary for growth.

At Back 2 Basickz, this time of year reflects the energy we see in our youth every day. Spring brings fresh opportunities to learn, connect, and step outside of comfort zones. Whether it’s through our workshops, mentorship, or community programs, we are committed to creating spaces where young people can build confidence, explore new interests, and develop skills that will carry them forward.

This month, we are especially excited to continue expanding our programming from hands-on learning experiences to wellness-focused initiatives that support both mental and physical health. As always, our goal is to meet youth where they are and walk alongside them as they grow.

We also recognize that growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes a community. To our partners, supporters, families, and volunteers, thank you for continuing to pour into this work. Your support helps us plant seeds that will have lasting impact.

As we move further into spring, we encourage our youth to embrace new beginnings, stay open to opportunities, and remember that every step forward – no matter how small – is progress.

Let’s continue to grow together.

With gratitude,

Amanda Coombs

Executive Director

Monthly highlights

Josiah Henson: Museum of African History

This past month, our youth had the opportunity to visit the Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History—an experience that was both powerful and deeply educational.

Through this visit, our youth learned about the life and legacy of Josiah Henson, whose journey from enslavement to freedom helped shape Black history in both Canada and the United States. Walking the grounds and hearing these stories firsthand brought history to life in a way that truly resonated.

The trip sparked meaningful conversations, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black communities throughout history. Moments like these remind us how important it is for our youth to see, feel, and connect with their history beyond the classroom.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to the museum staff and volunteers for creating such a welcoming and impactful experience, and to our amazing youth for showing up with curiosity, respect, and engagement.

📸 Be sure to check out the photos from our trip—we’re excited to share these moments with you!

Launching the new Barber & Braiding Studio

Our newly renovated Barber & Braiding studio is here and is more than just a place for a fresh cut or braid-up. It is a vibrant platform for our youth to showcase their skills while creating unique hairstyles.

In collaboration with Back 2 Basickz staff and the youth, this space was painted by a team and designed to reflect their very own styling salon with new chairs, mirrors and lighting to enhance the space.

The new and improved Barber & Braiding studio looks forward to serving youth and the community. See flyer for more information on how to book an appointment.

Youth Shout Out

Jahmoyi has truly stood out as a pillar within the Back 2 Basickz community, consistently demonstrating maturity, leadership, and a strong sense of responsibility. Known for his calm and stoic nature, he brings a voice of reason to those around him, helping to guide and support his peers in a positive direction.

Beyond his character, Jahmoyi has been incredibly hands-on in the center—whether it’s fixing, building, or stepping in to solve problems, he shows a level of initiative that sets him apart. He is always ready for the next task, always asking how he can contribute, and always pushing himself to grow.

Jahmoyi’s dedication, reliability, and quiet leadership have made a lasting impact on the program, and we are proud to recognize him as our Youth of the Month.
